Don't become a victim of burglary. Make your home secure. The 'Crime
Prevention' guidelines that follow offer you practical advice on security
measures that should be taken for different parts of your home.
Please also visit the Surrey
Police Website for further advice about helping to ensure your
home is secure.
Leaving your Home
When leaving your home, even for a short period, always lock all
external doors and windows and set your burglar alarm (if you have
one).
- If you are going away for a longer time, use a timer or sensor
to control your lighting (see lighting)
so your home appears occupied.
- Make sure you cancel your milk and newspaper deliveries while
you're away. Click
here for tips on what to do when planning a trip away.
Fire Safety
- Fit smoke alarms that conform to the British Standard (BA 5446)
on every floor.
Bogus Callers
- Not all burglars break in. Some will try to get you to open
the door and let them in. They may pretend to be from the water,
gas, electricity, phone or TV Company.
- Protect yourself against bogus callers by remembering:
1. Stop - are you expecting anyone?
2. Secure - Put the door chain
on before opening the door.
If you do not have a door chain, on the back
door as well as the front door, please have some fitted as soon
as possible. If this is difficult for you to arrange you may receive
assistance by contacting Social Services, your local Borough Council
or a Surrey Police Crime Reduction Advisor/Neighbourhood Specialist
Officer.
3. Check - ask to see an identification
card and phone the company they say they are from. If they really
are who they claim, they won't mind waiting while you check or
coming back when you're not alone.
If in doubt, keep them out!
Child Rescue Alert
- As evidenced by our position as one of the primary drivers of Child Rescue Alert, the issue of child safety has always been an extremely high priority for Surrey Police and this year we are going one step further by providing parents with 'Child Return Alert' wristbands. This unique initiative is intended to safeguard children in the event they become separated from their parents/guardians during visits to public events. With the full support of ACPO-CPI, Surrey Police chose Tag n Go as their commercial partner for this initiative primarily because of their existing, simple to use, protocols and proven technology that combine to provide an effective 'return' process with security of information.
- This initiative is now being 'shared' throughout the police forces of SE England as well as Grampian Police and we are confident this further testing of the wristbands will give added peace of mind to parents whilst providing a safer environment for children at all upcoming summer events.
